Gemito Artistic Foundry was founded in 1936 and focuses its activities on Maestro Vincenzo Gemito. It is directed by Francesco Guerritore and Andrea Guerritore, of whom Gemito was their great-grandfather.
The Foundry, with its treads originating from the Maestro, executes reproductions of his sculptures and other famous sculptures with the procedure of fusion. Artisan creations are therefore realised utilising the antique techniques for the workings of Cellini.
The first operating phase targets in obtaining the "forms" of the work treads, successively reforming them in wax; at the end of this process, a delicate process is carried out consisting in the retouching of the was statue. The retouching of the statue faithfully respects all the characteristics of the original work. The figure is then enclosed in a chalk-covering known as "luto" which is resistant to the high temperatures of the furnace.
During the phase of baking, due to the high temperature, the wax figure gets enclosed in the chalk-form; it melts thus allowing the strained metal to take its form. This is why such procedure is called "fusion of lost wax".
Once the metal is strained and cooled, the statue is freed from the chalk.
Successively two important procedures are carried out: Raspinatura and chiselling.
The first phase consists in eliminating impurities caused by the fusion; the second phase has the scope to evidence any peculiar features of the figure.
The last and complex phase is that of varnishing. Interventions of acid fires are carried out to give a particular chromatic effect and chiaroscuro.
The foundry has developed in a continuous manner as from the date of commencement, operating in a qualified way on behalf of institutions, public administrations, private citizens and religious associations.
